IT STARTED AS A

THE COUPLE BEHIND FRIENDS & FOUNDERS SHARE A PASSION AND AMBITION FOR THEIR YOUNG, FAMILY-OWNED COMPANY.
IT’S A DEVOTION THAT’S DRIVEN THEIR WORK FROM THE START, AND WAS FOUNDED IN ROMANCE

 THE STORY BEHIND

Ten years ago, on an icy night in Stockholm, a young talented Swedish designer met a Danish guy from the design-furniture industry. Their shared passion for architecture, design, and life itself made the two inseparable. That’s when it began: the start of a relationship that changed both of their worlds and brought about the birth of Friends & Founders.
Perhaps it was written in the stars… who knows?
It took five years before the couple returned to Stockholm as business partners and founders of the new contemporary
Scandinavian design brand Friends & Founders. And one of their first stages was the Stockholm Furniture Fair.
Ida Linea and Rasmus Hildebrand´s years of experience within the field of design, interior architecture, product development and sales
led to the creation of a new collection of
furniture, lighting, and
objects. The style was ahead of its time. Only a few hours into their first fair, the international design press
embraced Friends & Founders and affirmed what the two creators had felt so strongly.

CHAPTER 1 – “FAVORITE SPOT PHILOSOPHY”

The original idea for the first collection in 2013, was based on Friends & Founders´ “favorite spot philosophy”

FIND YOUR SPOT.
MAKE ROOM FOR PERSONALITY.
GET INSPIRED AND SHARE WITH OTHERS.

“We try hard to fulfil your needs by influencing, inspiring and supporting your way of living. We wish the users to have a long-term relationship with our products by
designing objects to last.”

The designs take influence from a Scandinavian heritage in terms of quality craftsmanship and the idea of
surrounding oneself with fewer, more essential things. By way of ensuring a product’s longevity and utility Friends & Founders strives to find new materials and methods of design.

“We want people to understand that it’s worth investing in innovative, contemporary furniture where multi-functions are built in, thinking about how to expand the use of the product. Also where the manufacturer has thought about sustainability in designing and producing objects that will last,” Rasmus says.

CHAPTER 2 –
“NON ICONIC COLLECTION – GEOMETRIC PERFORMANCE”

The visions for the brand continued to develop in the same track as earlier with intensified focus on the uniqueness in people and their interaction with design products.
In 2015 the NON-ICONIC collection was launched and it featured furniture and artefacts that celebrate the
individual and honor distinct personalities.

“I am inspired by everyday life, and I encourage others to live in the present. It is the here and now.
Curate your own life, create your own story and make things happen.
I believe that making room for personality to shine
creates inspiring environments and opens the space to interesting setups and spatial relationships with others.
Surrounding yourself with original things that mean something special to you or remind you of something or someone, creates authentic
atmospheres.”
– IDA L. HILDEBRAND

Right from the start the founders had a strong belief in creating their own design direction, different from the prevailing NEW NORDIC wave, a trend that
characterized most of the Scandinavian furniture scene and was soon to go out of fashion.
Friends & Founders distinctive design direction,
curated by Ida Linea Hildebrand, staged a “geometrical performance act” which focused on mathematical
theories, geometrical shapes and outlines.

“Reducing material and approaching the limit of what is technically possible fascinates me as an designer. I am unwilling to compromise when it comes to design and the realization of our ideas. Playing with strong
silhouettes has become an important element in my work and this is something that Friends & Founders will continue to explore.”

By creating awareness of their designs, Friends & Founders got instant international attention for their architectural, sculptural, and distinctive
artistic designs. These traits have become signatures for the brand and for the designs made by Ida L. Hildebrand.

CHAPTER 3 – “FRAGMENTS by Friends & Founders”

Friends & Founders launched the extended collection of furniture and objects during the Stockholm Furniture Fair in 2017.

The exhibition was curated by the creative
director under the theme “FRAGMENTS,” the third chapter in the story and philosophy of Friends & Founders. The exhibition was envisaged as a set of scenes presenting different moments in life – memories and dreams, expectations, achievements and
inspiration. It comprised fragments with
different perspectives, reflecting a “whole,” which counted and mattered.

The products were accompanied by classic geometric architectural elements and colours drawn from
Classicist, Renaissance and Modernist influences. The artist created hand-painted archways from palettes of zinc-white, ocher and contemporary blue.
The exhibition theme aligned with Friends & Founders’ overall design philosophy:
the materials will remain – so too shall the products you choose to live with.

A NEW CHAPTER IS BEING WRITTEN

The philosophy of Friends & Founders is spreading to all parts of the world. We make new friends every day, and it’s a great pleasure to follow the results of these new collaborations. The diversity of projects and
installations are wide, which is exactly what we hoped it would be. People are using Friends & Founders´ products to support their own personal universe or company identity.

Today the collection is stronger than ever.
A firm decision to manufacture locally in Scandinavia and Europe turned out to be a wise choice.
It has allowed us to manage the craft behind the
manufacture of products. And with that control we can be flexible and ready to deliver on our clients’ special requirements.

Our products are developed to meet the
demands for the contract market and that is an
advantage even for our retail customers who get a guarantee of quality and durability. The designer´s
ability to integrate both architectural and artistic
elements into functional
furniture and objects is a rare skill. And our designer does it without sacrificing the many practical features in each product. That’s why people are often amazed at the possibilities of the collection. Once we get to work together closely with our customers and users, a new world of opportunities opens up and new ideas come to life.

Collaborations like these underline the “Friends” in our name. We highly appreciate the fact that it is not only about us (the “Founders”) but what we can
accomplish together.
